LinkedIn Group connecting function appears to have been removed…
Building a network on LinkedIn is important for many reasons.
We may want to build an audience to show our expertise..
Our aim may be to simply use that network to share valuable content..
using LinkedIn to generate leads is the sole reason why many use the platform.
Many of us when wanting to connect with someone will click on the Blue Connect button and look to see which of the options apply, choose one and then write a message and click send.
How many of us would normally look to see which Groups we have in common? How many of us when see we don’t share a Group woul have gone off and a joined a Group just to connect?
As a connection strategy using the same Group connection feature is well used or should I say WAS well used because it looks like LinkedIn have now removed this functionality from the profile Connect Button.
What does this all mean?
Frankly I’m not too sure…
What is known is that some Premium users now have the option to simply click on the connect button and a connection request is sent without having to add a personal message…not good I would have thought as the warm introduction element of connecting goes right out of the window.
LinkedIn does have loads of users who just connect with the default message but such requests normally get ignored. A friendly introduction is what is required to build the Meet Like Know Trust aspect of any business relationship and is possible more important in an online capacity. People need a reason to accept a request just as you need a valid one for asking for that connection.
You can send a personal message by going to the drop down menu that is to the right of Send An In Mail
Here you can then add a personal message which is far better than just sending a standard default introduction message.
All well and good but what is this saying about where LinkedIn is heading?
It would appear that LinkedIn are hell bent on making sure that people pay for using their platform which is no bad thing if they retain the functionality.
Having said that I am not sure what functioanlity will still be available on a free account after the connecting changes have been made.
I am aware that the three tier business options have now been replaced by a single buisness option that is a massive £442.65 a year…this includes VAT but also takes into account a 20% discount for paying annually…the standard Premium price is £39.99 a month or a massive £479.88 with VAT on top if you do not take the 20% discounted yearly option.
In the current connection message LinkedIn are clear about you only connecting with people that you know and gives a reason.
My cynical view is that the essence of the platform is changing to be less about valued connections and more about making money.
Maybe that’s a harsh view of the removal of a simple aspect of the functionality..maybe but I do feel that there have been far too many changes in the last year that have reduced the functionality of a once vibrant business social platform.
Signal was the real tool but LinkedIn decided that this was used only by a timy minority of usewrs so it went..no asking is it was OK to take it away…
The same with Polls and the same with Answers..
All these features were there to help and encourage conversations and interactions, a chance to build online realtionships to help with business growth.
It seems that these are no longer seen as core aspects which is a great shame.
It would be very interesting to see what the stats are for the numbers of people who no longer use LinkedIn.
Lets hope that this Group connecting function gets reintroduced, if anyone hears anything then please do let me know.
Looking forward to hearing your views.
